October 2009 gets 5 stars and stands as the best month for visiting Ningbo. It has been a very smooth month with warm temperature but without very hot peaks. Average temp was 26 degree Celsius (79 degree Fahrenheit) with almost no rain during the whole month. October in Ningbo is a reel summer period like we have in quite a few European countries. The main difference is not only a question of degree but mainly concerns the humidity level. If, for example, you walk on "La promenade des Anglais", famous avenue in Nice (south of France), during August you might have full sunshine with 38°C/100F but it will be much more bearable that walking at the same period and with the same temp. on "Zhongshan Dong lu" the main street in Ningbo. First the sunshine is stronger in Ningbo even with identical temperature and the use of parasol or umbrella is almost mandatory. In Nice (France) you might need a hat but as soon as you're under a building's shadow, you suddenly feel much cooler. In Ningbo this will make very little change because of the constant and high humidity level. This is why October in Ningbo, being one of the rare period when weather gets dry and temperature smooth, can be compared as a "European summer". If you plan to come over for visiting, you might choose October as this is the best time for wandering around, joining/organizing small trips and/or hiking around the city in places like FengHuang Shan (Beilun district), Siming Shan (Yuyuao district) or Jiulong Hu (Zhenhai district).
November 2009 can be considered as smooth as October although temperature dropped down a little but it did not rain for almost the first 10 days. From Monday the 9th, rain started to fall day and night without stopping but temperature stayed around 20°C/68F during the day (around 14°C at night). A few days later, rain kept falling down but temperature dropped down dramatically until 8°C/46°F. The wind was also quite strong during several days with strong gusts at night. We had to start the heaters and get out the winter covers. In Ningbo we usually use the air conditioners or small electric heaters to heat apartments as winters are quite short although we can have some freezing periods. From the 15th, rain stopped but temperature remained as low as 10 to 12°C during the day. On the 17th, the first snow appeared on the heights of Siming Mountains about 1 hour ride south west from Ningbo city center. Today is Monday the 23rd and after almost 2 weeks of rain without a break, this morning is sunny with no wind and thermometer at 10:00am shows 12°C/54°F in the shade, quite warmer under the sunshine. Days are still warm and every year the usual first cold wave arriving around the 10th of November is often followed by a last heat wave lasting about a week before the winter definitely settles down. From the 24th to the 27th a thick morning fog disturbed the traffic forcing authorities to close some roads and highways. Temperature though remained very smooth (20°C/68°F on the 26th at 12:00am).
December 2009 started with a few cold days but it did not last. As you can see on the photo below, the sky on Sunday the 6th was amazingly blue and without a single cloud. Temperature was smooth with 18°C/64°F and of course even warmer under the sunshine. Quite a few locals had taken the opportunity for an afternoon walk with family and kids. 2 days later showers came back and temperature dropped down a little. Friday the 11th was cloudy with 15°C/59°F but no rain. Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th were wet days with sprinkles of rain but temperature remained smooth. On the 14th rain stopped and temp dropped down a little with 12°C/54°F at 9:30am. On the 17th at 14:15pm thermometer is showing 10°C/50°F. With a few days in advance, winter has now definitely settled down and recent temperature was between 6 and 10°C but days are remaining sunny. On the 20th at 16:00, thermometer was showing 8°C/46°F. At the same time a winter storm hit Europe and North America with heavy snow. The Guardian.co.uk wrote: "Freezing weather brings death and disruption in Germany, Italy and across eastern Europe. More than 100 people have been killed in the cold snap across Europe, with temperatures plummeting and snowfall causing chaos from Moscow to Milan. For millions of others across the continent, the cold snap has brought severe disruption, with flight cancellations and traffic jams thwarting pre-Christmas travel plans. In Germany, where temperatures have fallen to -33C in certain parts, at least seven people are known to have lost their lives in the freezing weather." The Earthtimes.org wrote : "In central Spain, Madrid was covered with a blanket of snow, unusual for the Spanish capital. Residents were advised not to take to the roads." Paris and London were also concerned as Eurostar cross channel trains, suffering from these extreme conditions, did not run for more than 3 days. In the meanwhile, temperature in Ningbo rose again from the 21st up to 17°C/63°F on the 23rd at 14:00 in Ningbo city center and a shirt with or without a light jumper were enough to go out shopping around. The recent days remained cold but rather sunny and on the 30th of December we visited a theme park in Cixi city (part of Ningbo agglomeration). Temperature was cold around 12C/54°F but still all right as there was no wind. Finally the 31st, last day of the year was around 11C/54°F.
January 2010 First let us wish you all a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR ! For the first day of 2010, the weather was particularly sunny and temperature was about 12°C/54°F. From the 1st to the 8th, temperature during the day remained cold, still acceptable, around 10°C/50°F but dropped down near/under zero at night. From the 9th to the 11th it has been raining all day while temperature were quite low between 5 to 8°C but from Tuesday the 12th the rain stopped and fortunately sunshine came back although temp remained even lower between 3 to 6°C. The 13th was still sunny, temp slightly rose to 9°C. On Friday the 15th, people across China turned their eyes skyward when daylight faded as the sun changed into a blazing ring surrounding a dim disk. The eclipse was first visible at 4:37 pm (0837 GMT) in Yunnan's far west and last visible at 4:59 pm (0859 GMT) in Ningbo-Zhejiang and in several other eastern coastal provinces. The 18-19-20th were quite sunny with temperature around 14°C/59°F but from it dropped down again to 6-8°C in the afternoon of the 21st. These are quite typical weather conditions in Ningbo especially at this time of the year. In early spring, temperature's gap can sometimes be above 15°C from one day to another. What a great day we had on Saturday the 30th! The sunshine and mild temperature 19°C/66°F made the children park packed with families and kids during the whole day. Look at the photo below, although the park was about to close (about 5:00pm), people were still enjoying boat rides on the small lake while the sun was already going to sleep...
